Renamed and reduced to wait for Taiwan s entrance! Taiwan rarely sees export control of South Africa s offering chips

The South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DIRCO) recently issued an announcement without consulting the business situation, renamed and reduced the two offices in Taiwan, and took rare action on Taiwan and imposed restrictions on chips exported to South Africa on the grounds of national security doubts.

According to the latest statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs, without consulting with Taiwan, changed its name to the Taipei Business Office in South Africa from April 1 and the Taipei Business Office in Cape Town from April 1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its strict protest against the decision No. 2758 of the United Nations General Assembly and the "One China Policy".

According to the announcement of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, 47 items such as integrated circuits, chips, and memory sold to South Africa must be approved by the Ministry of Economic Affairs before exporting.

Officials of the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed to Bloomberg that South Africa has begun to pressure Taiwan since 2023 after receiving the Golden Brick Summit of Chinese President Johannesburg, and moved the ambassador from Pretoria to Johnnisburg. South Africa has further increased this requirement as South Africa prepares to host the G20 Leaders' Meeting in November and Jinping is expected to attend.

The Taiwan International Trade Agency stated in a statement that the South African government's actions have harmed Taiwan's national and public safety and are taking measures to restrict trade to protect our country's rights. South Africa had already broken diplomatic relations with Taiwan as early as 1997.

In response, South Africa reiterated that its relations with Taiwan are not political. Foreign Ministry spokesman Chrispin Phiri said that South Africa is an important supply country to metal, such as gold, which is very important to global semiconductor industries. Current economic diplomacy is fundamentally changing the way South Africa participates in global value links.

Phiri supplement, South Africa intends to go beyond the single-purpose resource development model and move towards the path of strategic value improvement. "This means developing advanced industries in the country and transforming raw materials into high-value products. This transformation will create a more powerful supply chain for the world and bring advanced and sustainable growth and employment opportunities to South Africa."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that it does not accept the unilateral violation of the South African government. The position of the two-sided agreement in 1997 will remain unchanged, and will continue to uphold the principles of equality and respect and communicate with the South African government. At the same time, it will unilaterally change the name and status of Taiwan's hostel for the other side, and will also take the counter-production based on the relevant circumstances.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also scrupulously calling for South Africa to be the host of the G20 Summit and should abide by the 1997 dual-party legal framework. Until the two sides of Taiwan and Fei have obtained the consensus of consultation, they should not adopt any forceful means of Taiwan's hosting operations or other actions that may interfere with the functions of civil service.
