Gerrard: I was very close to returning to Rangers but chose to quit

According to the BBC, Gerrard was interviewed about his recent refusal to return to coaching Glasgow Rangers.

Gerrard is currently idle at home. He served as the head coach of Rangers from 2018 to 2021 and led the team to win the Scottish League Championship in the 2020-21 season. Since then, Gerrard has coached Aston Villa and Daman United, but failed to achieve satisfactory results.

Last month, the Rangers fired their head coach Russell Martin. Gerrard held talks with the Scottish Premiership club but ultimately chose to withdraw from the campaign process. Gerrard said: "I was very close to returning to management at Rangers, my love for Rangers is 100 per cent genuine, but the timing was not right. I had several very positive and meaningful conversations with the club management, but the whole process felt a bit rushed. "I had a lot to think about and only a short time to make a decision, and there were a few things I was still unsure about. "If I were to take on such a big and crucial challenge - knowing that I have a deep affection and connection with Rangers - So for me, to take over this position again, all conditions must be perfect, and I must be 100% ready.”

Previously, it was reported that Gerrard had reservations about the current management structure of the Rangers Club-under the leadership of sporting director Thelwell and CEO Stewart, if Gerrard returns, the position may be head coach (head coach) rather than full-power team manager (manager), which is one of the reasons for his hesitation.

When asked about this, Gerrard said: "Some things, you have to do your due diligence. I had to analyze, is this the right job for me? Is the timing right? Is everything good enough for me to give my best in this position? Unfortunately, in terms of timing, it didn't feel like it was the right time. I have the highest respect for Rangers, so if I only did 80 to 90 per cent I will never take over rashly. But I hope that one day, I will be more prepared, and by then, maybe the opportunity to return to the Rangers will arise again."
